Election Day Presidential VoteQ: Who is eligible to vote in United States federal elections?

A: Only U.S. citizens and naturalized citizens who are 18 years of age and older can vote in U.S. federal elections. Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) and nonimmigrants are NOT legally allowed to vote in United States elections.

Q: How do I know if I’m registered to vote?

A: Many states let you check your registration status online and most states will send you a voter registration card within a few weeks if you’ve successfully registered to vote, or a notification if there is a problem with your application.

Check with your state or territory election office for procedures for your location, or visit https://vote.usa.gov/ and select your state for further details on how to register to vote.

Q: How do I vote if I am a U.S. citizen living abroad?

A: U.S. citizens living abroad can vote by absentee ballot, which allows you to vote before the election. You return the ballot by mail to your local election officials. Visit https://vote.usa.gov/ to locate your local office and inform them of your current location.

U.S. citizens living abroad must remember to change their location. Click – “A U.S. citizen residing outside the U.S. temporarily.”
