Higgins’ “Make Nexus Work Act”

Congressman Brian Higgins (D-NY 26th District) was in Buffalo on Monday, January 30, 2023, to talk about his new bill proposal. The proposed bill is called the “Make NEXUS Work Act” and will allow individuals to attend virtual NEXUS interviews. Under Higgins’ bill people who are applying for NEXUS will be able to connect through a smartphone, tablet, or home computer for their virtual NEXUS interviews.

The purpose of this bill is to help with NEXUS backlogs, which are currently at an average processing time of 12-14 months. At the conference, Higgins emphasized that this legislation is important for Western New York because its economy is deeply integrated with Ontario’s economy. He noted that Canadians spend about $20 billion a year in the United States and that 30% of people flying out of Buffalo airport are Canadian. It is important that this bill is passed because Western New Yorkers rely on predictable access to and from Canada and vice versa.
