New Designs Roll Out for Green Cards & Employment Authorization Documents

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced the introduction of new designs to improve security of Green Cards and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs).

USCIS claims that these new documents contain “state-of-the art technology” that will safeguard national security and improve customer service. The changes to the documents will include improved detailed artwork, tactile printing that is more integrated with the artwork, enhanced optically variable ink, highly secure holographic images on the front and back of the cards, a layer-reveal feature with a partial window on the back photo box, and date fields in different places than previous versions.

This redesign shows USCIS’ continued commitment to proactively fight against the threat of secure document tampering, counterfeiting, and fraud, according to USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou. The director also noted that consistent updates to secure documents ensure the continued integrity of those documents issued by the agency.

Issuance of the newly designed cards began on 1/30/2023. However, some Green Cards and EADs issued after that date may still display the previous design format because USCIS will use supplies purchased for the old design until they are depleted. Both versions of the cards are acceptable. USCIS notes that although the newly designed cards are being issued, this does not render currently issued cards invalid. Current cards will remain valid until their expiration date (unless otherwise noted).

USCIS encourages those with older cards to consider applying for a replacement card to prevent fraud or tampering should the card get lost or stolen. The Document Management Division in the USCIS Office of Intake and Document Production redesigns the cards every three to five years to discourage fraud and counterfeiting.
