Starting June 12, 2024, travelers can conveniently renew their passports online! This new service aims to simplify the renewal process and save you time and effort. Read on for what you need to know.
Eligibility & Process
Travelers aged 25 and older with a valid passport issued between 2009-2015 are eligible for renewal. It is also important to ensure that your current passport has been valid for 10 years and meets the eligibility requirements. First time passport applicants and those who wish to update their biographical information (name, gender, date of birth) must still use the mail in process for renewal.
How it Works
Each day around 1pm ET, a limited number of online renewal spots will open. Make sure to act fast to secure a spot! It is also worth noting that while online renewal offers convenience, it does not guarantee faster processing times and is not eligible for expedited services. Expect to receive your new passport in 6-8 weeks.
This online renewal service is currently in trial mode. The Passport Department will continue to gather user feedback and make necessary updates to enhance the process.
Background & Benefits
During the pandemic, passport processing times stretched up to 18 weeks due to staffing issues. Thankfully, these have shortened significantly. The online renewal aims to streamline the process, making it more convenient and less time-consuming for eligible travelers.
Conclusion
As the program evolves, the window for online renewal applications will extend, offering more flexibility to travelers. Embrace this new, hassle-free way to renew your passport and focus on planning your next adventure.
