The House Passes a Bill to Increase STEM Immigrant Flow to the U.S.

On February 4th, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the America COMPLETES Act which is a legislative attempt to increase the flow of STEM field immigrants to the U.S. The Bill was passed with the votes swaying 222 for and 210 against. The content of the Bill has several provisions, mainly boosting STEM industries in the U.S. in various ways such as providing funds to chipmakers, scientific researchers, and more.

More specifically on the immigration side of things, this bill would exempt those individuals in the STEM fields who possess Ph.D.’s from annual green card limits. The goal of the legislation is to relieve the long wait times many are experiencing when dealing with USCIS, especially in the sectors of immigration dealing with highly skilled immigrants. The Bill still needs to pass through the Senate and must be signed into law by the President, but it is a step in the right direction for legal immigration.
