Super Lawyers is a nationally recognized, independent attorney-rating service that identifies outstanding lawyers across more than 70 practice areas and all 50 states. The selection process is rigorous, research-driven, and deliberately designed to prevent manipulation.
Here’s how it works: attorneys are nominated by their peers; lawyers who have personally observed them in action, whether as opposing counsel, co-counsel, or in other firsthand professional settings. Those nominations are then combined with independent research, evaluating each candidate on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Candidates with the highest scores move forward to a “blue ribbon” peer evaluation panel, where they are scored on a scale of one to five by fellow practitioners in their field.
The final lists are compiled on a state-by-state basis. Only the top 5% of attorneys in each state earn the Super Lawyers distinction. The Rising Stars list applies the same rigorous process, with one additional requirement: candidates must be 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less. Only the top 2.5% of attorneys in each state qualify.
Critically, advertising plays no role in the selection. Attorneys cannot pay to be listed, and self-nominations are not permitted. This is what makes a Super Lawyers designation genuinely meaningful, it’s a reflection of who your peers believe you are, not how loudly you market yourself.
