In preparation for the new year, our team is growing! We are so excited to welcome new Chief Financial Officer, Nichole Herr. To learn a bit more about she is, we interviewed her on her career, home, and things she loves.
What led you to finance?
I fell in love with finance at my first job out of college. My desk was located right outside the CFO’s office, so I got to listen to him work and learn from him. This triggered my passion for finance, and I decided to go back to school to take a few accounting classes. Then we I moved back to Buffalo, I was an Office Manager for Altus Management, LLC, where I oversaw the establishment of the accounting and human resources departments. Plus, I reported to the CFOs of each hospital in our network. This is where I really got my hands-on training.
What is something you love about where you live?
I am originally from Cuba, New York which is about an hour and a half southeast of Buffalo in the Southern Tier, Allegany County. We are known for Cuba Cheese, not Cuban cigars—which seems to disappoint some people. It is a very small town with one stoplight, and they got a McDonald’s after I moved away. It is located in a valley, so the drive down into the town is very picturesque and scenic.
What is one (non-financial) thing you know a lot about?
I studied Spanish Language & Literature in college. I loved Spanish class in high school and love the Spanish culture overall. While I have never been to Spain, I have been to Mexico several times and used my Spanish skills there. I am not as fluent as I used to be, but I love being able to speak or translate for others whenever I can. Just recently I was at the bank and help translate being the customer and the bank teller. At the firm I used to work at, I would help translate between attorneys and clients when needed.
What is your favorite holiday?
My favorite holiday is Christmas—when I lived in NYC I loved going and seeing the Christmas tree and ice rink in Rockefeller Center.
What is the last movie you saw in a theater?
While I haven’t gone to a movie theater and saw a movie in a while, I have recently been binge watching the Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel.
What is one thing you are looking forward to about working at Berardi?
I am really looking forward to learning more about immigration law—I have worked at other law firms, but none practiced immigration law. I am excited to become more familiar with this area of law.
