Government Shutdown Wait Times Blog

This week, National Post quoted Rosanna Berardi, Esq., Managing Partner of Berardi Immigration Law, discussing how the U.S. government shutdown is affecting immigration operations and visa processing.

Rosanna pointed out that because U.S. Customs and Border Protection is considered essential, land border crossings are expected to remain open. However, she advises travelers to “plan accordingly by allowing extra time when crossing into the United States.”

She also warns that U.S. consulates in Canada could experience delays or even temporary closures, depending on staffing and resources, which would slow down visa appointments and document processing.

“The shutdown is another piece of the complex immigration puzzle from this Administration. It’s important for travelers to leave extra time for travel and be aware of any policy changes.”

According to Rosanna, the shutdown signals that the U.S. administration is doubling down on strict enforcement. Travelers should be prepared for heightened scrutiny at airports and border crossings, including deeper questions about one’s background, online profiles, or affiliations.
